Heck, I never even heard the fan spin up during repeated 30-minute Cinebench tests or when transcoding several 4K Blu-ray rips back to back. the M1 chip can hit the very best speeds it’s capable of and sustain them without throttling.

My 2012 is getting a little long in the tooth and I'm going to want to upgrade some time. All in about 900 (589 + 200 for the SSD + tax).

Most of my media is in an MKV container with H264 (high profile 4.1)/AC3 inside, so my NAS can handle the demuxing, but even transcoding an audio stream (for example, DTS to AC3) can cause my NAS to hit 75% CPU usage. Like Plex's other Player apps, it'll play all your music and video, but it has lots of powers the other apps don't. MP4 are containers that hold video and audio streams. I was thinking along the same lines for my home server a refurbed base M1 Mini (8GB/256GB) with a 2TB SSD SATA hanging off the USB 4 ports in an enclosure. Find your new headless Mac under ‘Network’ For access using a non-Mac PC, download a VNC client of choice and follow the instructions on the VNC client to connect to the remote Mac. If you have media in a format your client (aTV, SmartTV, Computer, etc.) can natively handle, you’ll be golden otherwise you may be disappointed by this option.
The problem with this is that the CPU is underpowered for transcoding (if necessary).
